(Top 5 coffee spots at the end)

Coffee, The liquid goodness that keeps us all going, is universally loved and needed to function at a high level on a daily basis. Cup of Joe, Java, bean juice, high octane, mud or dirt, no matter what you call it or how you express it, coffee is used as a stimulant and also as a non alcoholic social lubricant. Getting coffee is a way to casually hang out for no more than 30 minutes because finishing this cup will naturally wind down the conversation.

What is coffee? According to Wikipedia, coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain Coffee species. Coffee is native to tropical regions of Africa and specifically originated in Ethiopia and Sudan. Coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries. The two most commonly grown are C. Arabica and C. Robusta. Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed and dried. Dried coffee seeds are referred to as beans and are roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. Roasted beans are ground and then brewed with near boiling water to produce the iconic beverage known as coffee.

Fun fact: While coffee is native to Ethiopia and Sudan, the earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking as a beverage was in Yemen in Southern Arabia in the middle of the 15th century.

Fun fact: Brazil is the leading grower of Coffee beans producing one-third of the world total. Brazil couldn’t afford to send it’s athletes to Los Angeles for the 1932 Olympics, so the government loaded them in a ship full of coffee which was sold on the way to finance their trip.

Fun fact: Coffee is the world’s 2nd largest traded commodity. Crude oil is first. Coffee is also the 2nd most popular drink in the world, not including water which has no equal, tea is 1st, beer is 3rd.

Fun fact: Until recently, Hawaii was the only American state that grew coffee. Farms in California began growing coffee bushes.

Fun fact: The average cup of coffee has more caffeine than a shot of espresso. When it comes to caffeine content ounce by ounce, espresso wins with about 40 milligrams per ounce versus 10 milligrams per ounce in a brewed cup of coffee. However, the serving size matters. A 2 ounce double shot of espresso contains 80 milligrams of caffeine whilst a 12 ounce cup of brewed coffee has about 120 milligrams.

Fun fact: “Kopi Luwak” is the most expensive coffee in the world. It comes from Indonesia and is made from beans digested from the Asian Palm Civet. In other words, it comes from cat poop. It sells for about $175.00 per pound and higher.

Speaking of poop, researchers say caffeine not only jump starts your day, but it can jump start the other end of your body. Almost 30% of coffee drinkers needed to use the bathroom within twenty minutes of drinking a cup of coffee. While caffeine is a great energy booster, it may also stimulate the urge to poop. Studies have shown that it can activate contractions in your colon and intestinal muscles. Next time you’re feeling a little constipated, drink a cup of joe in the morning as a stimulant and a natural alternative to laxatives.

September 29th is National Coffee Day in the United States.
