Butchertown Hall, the self proclaimed “Soul of Germantown”, where they patiently craft exciting food with soul, both primitive and contemporary. All successful restaurants will incorporate a three or four word descriptive slogan that identifies who they are and to whom they are marketing towards. Dave & Busters has a slogan of Eat, Drink & Play, which they expanded to Eat, Drink, Play, & Watch sports here. They have been in business for over 50 years, very successful at establishing an identity of who they are and to whom they are trying to capture. So what is Butchertown Hall about? Butchertown Hall is a contemporary New American restaurant specializing in Texas style Barbecue, Craft Tacos and Killer Margaritas.

Terry Raley utilizes an open fire hearth as well as a custom built high capacity smoker to create a concept that fuses Texas style Barbecue with the German butcher shop culture that once lined the streets of this neighborhood. Their menus borrow from the marriage of Spanish, Mexican and Eastern European influences. Located smack in the middle of the Germantown neighborhood lined up with tons of apartment complexes no doubt catering to the urban hipster clientele, it was a refreshing hidden jewel and really felt like the neighborhood or local spot to go to. I didn’t see many other restaurants lined up next to each other, similar to what you would find at the Gulch, so it was refreshing to see that this was really the only spot to visit on this block. You can categorize this restaurant into many forms but it best fits the neighborhood pub where the majority of the clientele resides within walking distance.

Butchertown Hall has a contemporary urban artistic feel and look that visually attracts and invites newcomers who might have just accidentally stumbled across this hidden treasure as well as regulars who patron this local watering hole frequently. The appearance, very inviting but the awesome mixture of 90’s and modern music was a refreshing change from the country music that is prevalent in Nashville, and as you get closer, you recognize that the patio is a popular retreat and meeting place when you notice the wonderful aroma of the barbecue smoke that captures your nose and stirs wonderful memories of friends and family associated with barbecue.

As we sat at the bar, already impressed with the experience so far, I really wanted to try one of their killer margaritas but opted for the Hacker Pschorr Munich Gold brew instead. I asked the bartender what their “go to” items were, what they were famous for. The bartender suggested the Brisket Sandwich with the brussels sprout side and for starters, the Queso. My better half being gluten free ordered the Primavera salad, but indulged with a nice glass of Chardonnay and for dessert, a glass of Sparkling Rose.

The overall impression is artistically tasteful and clean. Inviting and fun. I was delighted to find that the bathrooms were clean and also “crafty” in appearance. Nothing can ruin a positive experience faster than a drunk loud obnoxious guest and a dirty bathroom. A crying baby that is constantly ignored by their parents is up there but being a parent myself, I tend to have a bit more tolerance to crying babies.

Excited to go back and try some of their craft tacos and killer margaritas.

Something I found quirky and fascinating is that the address is printed and located on the upper right hand of the menu upside down as part of the name of the restaurant.
